Mirka and Åbo Akademi begin first SHAPE R&D project

The project "Data-Driven Sustainability Management" (DDSM) is coordinated by Åbo Akademi and is the first of Mirka’s SHAPE ecosystem projects to be launched. The DDSM project aims to create measurable evidence for sustainability and revolutionize companies' sustainability efforts through the development and implementation of data-driven models.

The background to the project is that measuring sustainability remains a complex task for companies. Companies have long relied on static assumptions about energy consumption, emissions, or pollution. However, these assumptions fail to consider all variables, such as how customer usage affects this data. Therefore, Viktor Sundholm, ecosystem project leader, emphasizes the importance of measurable evidence for sustainability.

“Through this project, we will be able to provide companies with concrete tools to integrate measurable sustainability aspects into their operations”,  Viktor explains.

Mirka and Åbo Akademi will collaborate to develop a dynamic tool that can measure sustainability using data-driven models. The project will run for 26 months with a budget of 5 million euros. The DDSM team is grateful for the funding from Business Finland and looks forward to collaborating with its project partners. Among those participating in DDSM are Åbo University, Baltic Yachts, Herrmans Bike Components and Saalasti.
